Variation of Premises / Club Licenses
You can apply to vary:
- An existing Premises Licence Premises Licence/Club Premises Certificate
- A Designated Premises Supervisor (DPS)
Vary a Premises Licence/Club Premises Certificate
You can apply to vary an existing Premises Licence.
Such as:
- An extension of licensing hours (if the extension is a ‘one off’ a Temporary Event Notice will be more appropriate)
- To add licensable activities
- Change the layout of the premises
Some variations can be made under the Minor Variation Procedure - see below for more details. If you are unsure of which procedure to use - please contact the Licensing team for advice.
The application process for a full variation to an existing Premises Licence is the same as for a new premises licence - including the fee structure.
There is a 28 day consultation as part of the application process.

Notification
If the application is not being submitted electronically, a copy of all printed applications must be copied and sent to:
- The Responsible Authorities
- The Licensing Authority
How is the application decided?
The application is subject to a 28 day consultation process with the statutory Responsible Authorities and the public.
A 'representation' can be made by anyone who is not in favour of the application. They must address one, all or a combination of the four licensing objectives.
These are:
- Prevention of Crime and Disorder
- Public safety
- Prevention of a Public Nuisance
- Prevention of harm to children and young persons
If no representations are received the licence can be issued.
If there are relevant representations the matter will be decided at a Licensing Committee hearing.
How long will it take?
Under normal circumstances the entire process will take 2 months to decide the application.

Minor variation of Premises Licence/Club Premises Certificate
Holders of a Premises Licence or Club Premises Certificate can apply for a minor variation of licensable activities - including timings. It is mostly used to amend the layout of premises.
Please note: It cannot be used to add the licensable activity of selling alcohol or to increase the hours for the sale of alcohol to an existing licence.

Notification
If the application is not being submitted electronically a copy of all printed applications must be copied and sent to:
- The Police
- The Licensing Authority
The Licensing Authority will decide what responsible authorities to inform.
Please note: It is Council policy to notify Sussex Police about every minor variation.
